Steve Homes

Steve Homes is a flamenco guitarist working as a soloist and with flamenco singers and dancers. He has also worked with many fusion groups including Indian, Arabic, Irish, Japanese and Jazz.

 

He began playing at the age of ten and soon developed a passion for flamenco - an unusual pastime for a boy growing up in the grey and chilly seaside town of Lowestoft on the East Suffolk coast during the 60's. Andalucia's exotic promises might as well be a world away but he, inspired by the recordings he managed to get hold of - the greats like Sabicas and later Paco de Lucia - taught himself and by fourteen was already giving his first solo performances in local folk clubs, schools, summer shows and festivals.

 

Now he is widely regarded as one of the UK's most innovative and masterful performers of the flamenco guitar. His outstanding technical ability and creativity gives him freedom of expression and rhythmic clarity making his a unique sound.

 

His compositions are based on traditional flamenco rhythms, but one can immediately sense an intimacy with other musical forms such as jazz, rock and oriental melodies. Titles like 'Giraffe' and 'Elevator' reflect his commitment to the expanding rather than static tradition of flamenco.

 

Presently he lives in London, composing, performing and teaching flamenco guitar. In his career to date have been many TV and radio appearances and performances at theatres and Art Centres including The Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, The Barbican, The National Theatre, The Commonwealth Institute and The Glastonbury Festival. He is the featured guitarist on the Japanese anime series 'Bleach'.

He has made several recordings of his original music, most notably Secret Garden and The Silk Road.
